Ο δρόμος της θάλασσας είναι ο δρόμος του αγνώστου... Όταν χάνεται η στεριά όταν φαίνεται μονάχα ο ορίζοντας, ο άνθρωπος της θάλασσας καλείται να υπερβεί τις δυνάμεις του... Το υδάτινο στοιχείο είναι ο βασικός εκπρόσωπος του φόβου και οι μάχες με τα στοιχειά του νερού - η μάχη με το φόβο - είναι αμέτρητες στον ανοιχτό ωκεανό. Όσοι μένουν πίσω στην ασφαλή γνώριμη γη ζουν μια ασφαλή γνώριμη ζωή. Όσοι όμως επιβιβάζονται στο ατομικό τους Drakkar αναζητούν πράγματα και μυστικά πέρα από τα γνώριμα... και τα ασφαλή. Διαβαίνουν το χρόνο γιατί δεν υπάρχει τόπος στη μέση του γκρίζου πουθενά. Και μέσα στο ταξίδι στο χρόνο αναζητούν μνήμες - το θησαυρό της ζωής. Όταν η περιπέτεια τελειώσει ο θησαυρός θα στοιβαχτεί μέσα σε πελώρια σεντούκια, στολισμένα με δυο ανάγλυφα κοράκια.

Οι Βίκινγκς αποτελούν κύριο εκπρόσωπο της δεύτερης αυτής - Death or Glory - οδού. Το να βάζεις πλώρη για το άγνωστο, το ασυνήθιστο, το μυστηριώδες... Μέσα στην ομίχλη πλέουν τα δρακόπλοια με το πολεμικό τους πλήρωμα. Καβαλάνε την καταιγίδα, δαμάζουν σκοτεινά κύματα, προκαλούν τις Νόρνες που κλώθουν και υφαίνουν ασταμάτητα το πεπρωμένο όλων. Οι στίχοι των Νορβηγών Enslaved (793 The battle of Lindisfarne) αφορούν σε μια από τις αγριότερες επιδρομές Viking, στη Μεγάλη Βρετανία. Η βαρβαρότητα των βορείων απέναντι στους μοναχούς του πλούσιου μοναστηριού του Lindisfarne, οι βεβηλώσεις και οι λεηλασίες αποτέλεσαν την αρχή μιας Viking Metal περιοδείας τριών αιώνων στις ακτές και τα βασίλεια του Νότου.

Εκτός των άλλων, η ανελέητη επίθεση βοήθησε τη διάνθιση των χριστιανικών προσευχών, ενώ ερευνητής της αυλής του Καρλομάγνου γράφει χαρακτηριστικά:

Από τις στέπες του μακρινού Βορρά ξεχύνεται ουρλιάζοντας μανιασμένα ο άνεμος του ολέθρου. Αγγίζοντας την παγωμένη κρούστα του χιονιού, σαρώνει τεράστιες εκτάσεις έρημης γης, βυθίζοντας τον υπερβόρειο κόσμο σε λευκή, μονότονη καταχνιά. Η θλιβερή βραχώδης ατμόσφαιρα με τη βλοσυρή αίσθηση απομόνωσης του πανοράματος, σκληραίνει το βλέμμα και μετατρέπει την ψυχή σε σκόνη και στάχτη.

Μέσα από την άγρια, ανυπόφορη τούτη μήτρα, μέσα από το αιώνιο σκοτάδι της νύχτας του Βορρά φιγούρες γιγάντιες πορεύονται ακατάπαυστα. Ογκώδεις, ψηλοί άντρες, με ξανθά μαλλιά και παγερά γαλάζια μάτια, ντυμένοι σκαλωτούς θώρακες και κερασφόρες περικεφαλαίες, προχωρούν μέσα στην απόκοσμη νεφελώδη σιγή, φέροντας σπαθιά και ασπίδες. Από τον οίκο του αιωνίου Χειμώνα ξεκινούν και κατεβαίνουν με κεραυνό και μέταλλο σε Νότο και Δύση, φέρνοντας πόλεμο και όλεθρο στα μέρη που ξεσπά ο παγερός Βοριάς. Παρότι όλοι τους μέλη της ίδιας φυλής, ο κινούμενος αυτός πληθυσμός των Αεζίρ απέχει από τη φυλετική μετακίνηση και μετοίκηση σε νέα γη. Ανάμεσά τους δεν υπάρχουν ξανθές γυναίκες ή γυμνά παιδιά. Είναι όλοι τους άνδρες, με το ένστικτο της μάχης και της επιβίωσης ριζωμένο στη βαρβαρική τους ύπαρξη. Έχουν κινήσει πάνω στο μονοπάτι της περιπέτειας μονάχοι, περιπλανώμενοι, εξερευνώντας και κατακτώντας, με μοναδικό τους οδηγό μια παρανοϊκή ώση να δουν πέρα από τον ορίζοντα…. είναι οι Marchers of Valhalla!

Marchers of Valhalla είναι ο τίτλος της μιας εκ των δυο πιο αγαπημένων μου ιστοριών του R.E.Howard και σίγουρα μιας από τις καλύτερές του. Ο Τεξανός Τζέημς Άλλισον, μέσω υπερβατικής εμπειρίας που θα του χαρίσει μια πανέμορφη γυναίκα από την μακρινή μυθιστορία της Γης, θα έχει την ευκαιρία να δει μιαν άλλη ζωή, άγνωστη μα κατά περίεργο τρόπο τόσο οικεία, με τα μάτια του πανύψηλου ξανθού πολεμιστή Χίαλμαρ - μιας άλλης προενσάρκωσής του. Ντυμένος το υπεράνθρωπο σώμα του Αζ θα πορευτεί με τη δύναμη των βαρβάρων του Βορρά, θα ζήσει περιπέτεια, σφαγή, έρωτα και θα βιώσει το τέλος που φέρνει η θαλάσσια μανία.

Η δύναμη των Αεζίρ, που ξεκίνησε από τη ζοφερή υπερβόρεια γη αριθμούσε αρχικά χίλιους πολεμιστές. Το χρωματισμένο με το χρώμα της σφαγής πέρασμά τους από τιτάνια δάση, γιγάντια βλοσυρά βουνά και ανελέητες ζούγκλες, ωστόσο, είχε το ανάλογο πορφυρό του κόστος. Έτσι, στο σημείο όπου η ορδή θα αντικρύσει τη μυστήρια πόλη Κχέμου – βασικό πεδίο εξέλιξης της περιπέτειας - έχει μειωθεί στους μισούς. Ήδη από την αρχή, ο Χάουαρντ ξεκαθαρίζει ότι ο πρότυπος αυτός στρατός βαρβάρων του Βορρά, δεν απαρτίζεται από Αρείους, μα από Αεζίρ. Η πολεμοχαρής αυτή στρατιά είναι πλησιέστερη στον επίλεκτο στρατό ηρώων της Βαλχάλλα των Βίκινγκς του μεσαίωνα ή στο παγερό πολεμικό χαρακτήρα της Υπερβορέας της Υβορειανής εποχής. Η πορεία του εκστρατευτικού αυτού σώματος, δεν εντάσσεται στην ιστορία, μα στη μυθιστορία της Γης.

Η πολεμική ελίτ όλων των πεδίων τούτου του κόσμου, με την καθοδήγηση του μονόφθαλμου, λυκίσιου Άζγκριμμ με τη γκρίζα γενειάδα, ενός πικρού, βλοσυρού πολεμιστή που παραπέμπει στον Όντιν, μεγάλωσε και ανδρώθηκε μέσα στη συνεχή αυτή πορεία σε άγνωστη γη. Η δύναμη των Αεζίρ είναι πέρα από το φυσικό. Όλοι τους γεννημένοι από λυκίσια φυλή, περνώντας τα χρόνια της νιότης τους μαχόμενοι ανθρώπους και κτήνη και τα στοιχεία της φύσης σε κάθε τους μορφή, έχουν χαραγμένο στην ψυχή τους το πνεύμα της πρωτόγονης αγριότητας. Μέσα τους καίει η φλόγα του αδάμαστου βαρβάρου, μια δύναμη που μπορεί να ακουστεί στο μακρύ αλύχτισμα του λύκου ή στο βρυχηθμό του ψυχρού βορείου ανέμου, που φωλιάζει στην ταραγμένη θάλασσα ή στο χτύπημα των φτερών του αετού, που παραμονεύει στη βαθιά σιωπή των απέραντων ερήμων.

Η ορδή αυτή, της οποίας μέλος αποτελεί ο Χίαλμαρ, αποτελεί πρότυπο πολεμικό σώμα υπέρ του καθαρού, ανόθευτου, πρωτογεννούς χαουρντικού βαρβαρισμού έναντι στον πολιτισμό και την εκφύλιση που αυτός επιφέρει. Όπως αναφέρεται, είναι αδύνατο για τον σύγχρονο άνθρωπο να καταλάβει το αρχέγονο πνεύμα της αγριάδας και του γνήσιου βαρβαρισμού. Μήτε υπάρχει αθλητής σήμερα να συγκριθεί στο δρασκελισμό, την αντοχή και τη φυσική δύναμη των πολεμιστών Αεζίρ. Κατ’ ανάλογο τρόπο, η πρώτη επαφή με τους κατοίκους της μυστηριώδους πόλης έχει χαρακτήρα σύγκρουσης. Το άψογα συντεταγμένο υπεράριθμο στράτευμα της πόλης ενάντια στην κατά μέτωπο έφοδο των λυκίσιων πολεμιστών. Η πειθαρχία και η τάξη ενάντια στην καθαρή αγριάδα του βαρβαρισμού. Η μάχη των πολλών ως εννιαία μονάδα ενάντια στη ατομική δύναμη και το χαοτικό ένστικτο της μανίας για σφαγή. Το τέλος της σύγκρουσης θα βρει τους πολιτισμένους κλειδωμένους στην ασφάλεια που παρέχουν τα τεράστια τείχη της πόλης και τους βαρβάρους στρατοπεδευμένους έξω από την πύλη να ετοιμάζουν νέο κύμα αίματος. Ο Χάουαρντ μέσα από τη χαρακτηριστική του βιωματική γραφή μας δίνει με σαφήνεια την έννοια του πολεμιστή του Όντιν, Einherjer – εκείνου που μάχεται μονάχος και αναμενόμενα δεν αφήνει περιθώρια αμφιβολίας για την πολεμική ανωτερότητα του βαρβάρου σε σχέση με τον πολιτισμένο.

Γι’ αυτό και ξεκινά η ύπουλη πολεμική στρατηγική, που κάποιοι θα ονόμαζαν εκπολιτισμό. Ο έντρομος άρχοντας της μυστηριώδους Κχέμου, θα στείλει πρόθυμα κορίτσια, φαγητό και δώρα στους Αεζίρ με απώτερο σκοπό να εξασφαλίσει την ειρηνική είσοδό τους στην πόλη, την ασφαλή εγκόλπωσή τους στο εσωτερικό των τειχών και την εκμετάλλευσή τους για την επικράτηση επί των παραδοσιακών εχθρών της πόλης. Οι νέοι – με την αγνότητα που χαρακτηρίζει τον πηγαίο και καθαρό βαρβαρισμό- ενδίδουν εύκολα, όμως ο γερο-γκρίζος Άζγκριμμ θυμίζει πως τα φιλιά και οι ερωτικοί λυγμοί των γυναικών σβήνουν και βουβαίνονται, όμως το σπαθί τραγουδά πάντα ένα νέο φρέσκο τραγούδι σε κάθε του κοψιά. Μπροστά στα δώρα και τα κοσμήματα, κουνά το κεφάλι και μουρμουρίζει πως τα στολίδια είναι σκόνη ματαιοδοξίας και χάνονται στο πέρασμα των χρόνων, όμως η κόψη της σφαγής δε στομώνει ποτέ. Ο ίδιος ο μονόφθαλμος άρχοντας του πολέμου, τον οποίο στον μεσαίωνα θα λάτρευαν ως Πολεμικό Θεό, δείχνει με τη στάση του το σημείο της ηγεσίας του. Σε αντίθεση με τον εκφυλισμένο άρχοντα της πόλης και τα σκλαβογεννημένους άθλιους που τον υπηρετούν, ο Άζγκριμμ δε ζητά γονυκλισία και στέκεται με σπαθί στο χέρι ανάμεσα σε περήφανους άντρες μαχητές.

Η πλοκή κατά τα άλλα είναι παρόμοια με αυτή των θεών του Μπαλ-Σάγκοθ, με μια ξανθή γυναίκα αιχμαλωτισμένη και ταγμένη στην επίσης αιχμάλωτη θεά Ιστάρ (το αιώνιο θηλυκό), την οποία ο Χίαλμαρ θα ελευθερώσει, σφραγίζοντας τον όλεθρο της αρχαίας πόλης κάτω από τα τιτάνια κύματα της οργής του Ποσειδώνα. Οι εξελίξεις κλιμακώνονται σε μια μεγάλη τελευταία μάχη όπου οι προδομένοι Αεζίρ θα πεθάνουν κάτω από τα ανελέητα κύματα πολεμώντας τον εκφυλισμένο τους εχθρό και σφαγιάζοντάς τον μέχρι την τελευταία τους πνοή.

Ο Ρόμπερτ Χάουαρντ, ως Τζέημς Άλλισον, αφήνει να διαχυθεί λύπη και ανέκφραστη οργή για τον σύγχρονό του κόσμο. Ένας άνθρωπος εκτός εποχής, ασυντόνιστος σε έναν κόσμο αντιηρωικό, απελπισμένος. Ως Χίαλμαρ, ωστόσο, ο Χάουαρντ-Άλλισον γνωρίζει και βιώνει τις καταβολές του με τη βοήθεια του Αιωνίου Θηλυκού. Πορεύεται με τους επίλεκτους της Βαλχάλλα, ζει ελεύθερα, πολεμά, σφαγιάζει, αγαπά… Ο Ρόμπερτ Χάουαρντ-Τζέημς Άλλισον ετοιμάζεται να αφήσει τον κόσμο για να ντυθεί ένα νέο ρωμαλέο κορμί… Ένας θρυλικός αποχαιρετισμός του Τεξανού συγγραφέα λίγο πριν τον θάνατο…

Ο πατέρας της σύγχρονης λογοτεχνίας του σπαθιού και της μαγείας έμεινε γνωστός κυρίως για τον Ατλάντειο Καλλ και τον Κιμμέριο Κόναν - και οι δυο τους βάρβαροι πρώιμοι χαρακτήρες των ύστερων ομόφυλων αγαπημένων του Χάουαρντ Κελτών. Ασυμβίβαστοι, εραστές της περιπέτειας, άρχοντες της μάχης. Το έπος όμως των Marchers of Valhalla είναι το ύψιστο μανιφέστο καθαρού βαρβαρισμού από τον Bob. Ο Χίαλμαρ και τα αδέλφια του δεν έχουν σαν πεπρωμένο να κυβερνήσουν ένα εκφυλισμένο πολιτισμένο κόσμο, δεν αρπάζουν το θρόνο με το σπαθί ή τον πέλεκυ. Έξω από τα όποια υλικά ή ιδεατά σύνορα η ανυπότακτη, αδάμαστη στρατιά του γκρίζου μονόφθαλμου Άζγκριμμ πορεύεται μέσα στους αιώνες και τις εποχές, ελεύθερη, αδέσμευτη… Συστρατεύεται μονάχα τα ελεύθερα πνεύματα – εκείνα που δε σκύβουν την κεφαλή, που ορθώνουν ανάστημα μονάχοι και λαχταρούν να δουν πέρα από τον ορίζοντα. Η στρατιά της Βαλχάλλα αδημονεί για την λυσσαλέα, ολέθρια εκείνη έφοδο, που θα φέρει το τέλος - μια νέα αρχή.

Η νύχτα του χειμερινού ηλιοστασίου. Η μεγαλύτερη νύχτα του χρόνου. Η εναρκτήρια περίοδος του νέου ηλιακού έτους. Μαγικά πράγματα συμβαίνουν εκείνη τη νύχτα, πολλά από τα οποία φέρουν ιδιαίτερο βάρος για ολόκληρη τη νέα χρονιά. Μέσα στο σκοτάδι χύνεται το σπέρμα που θα ενωθεί με την πτύχωση εκείνη της μεγάλης νύχτας, η οποία θα κυοφορήσει τον μαγικό υιό. Ο τελευταίος θα έρθει στη ζωή (και στην πραγματικότητα την περίοδο της μεγάλης ημέρας - εκείνης του θερινού ηλιοστασίου.

Όπως επιτάσσει η φρουρά του μέγα μάγου, έτσι και η φετινή μεγάλη νύχτα με βρήκε στην καρδιά της μυστικής φύσης. Βαστώντας το κερί του χειμώνα, πήρα το βορινό μονοπάτι, προς το μυστικό όρος. Διέσχισα βροχή, άνεμο παγωμένο, σκοτάδι βαθύ μέχρι να σταθώ και πάλι στο χιονισμένο οροπέδιο...

Λευκή φύση, βυθισμένη στην ομίχλη με περίμενε και φέτος... Χαιρέτισα και πάλι τους πράσινους φρουρούς της πύλης του βουνού και πήρα το χιονισμένο δρόμο για ένα σύμπλεγμα βράχων και γκρεμισμένων αρχαίων τοίχων... εκεί δεσπόζει η μεγάλη βελανιδιά... εκεί έστεκε αρχοντικά και φέτος. Απόθεσα το κερί προσεκτικά, ανάμεσα στα χαλάσματα. Η φλόγα του κρατά τη δύναμη ενός ολόκληρου ηλιακού κύκλου και πρέπει να κρατήσει ως το πρώτο χάραμα.

Τυλίγοντας το μουσκεμένο μου πανωφόρι γύρω από του ώμους, ξεκίνησα τη βάρδια μου. Άρχισα να ατενίζω μακριά στο Βορρά, να δω όνειρα που ακόμα δεν γίναν ύλη, μα έτοιμος να εντοπίσω τον εχθρό της ζωής και ακολούθως να τον εκτοπίσω.

Η νυχτερινή σκοπιά κυλούσε με τον αέρα να μουγκρίζει, τη βροχή να κοπάζει για λίγο, τα μάτια να κουράζονται, τη σκέψη να θολώνει.... Σκοτάδι...

....και μέσα από το σκοτάδι, ένα μάτι... να με κοιτά βλοσυρά, να με καίει με πύρινη σοφία, να ορίζει προσταγή...

Πανύψηλος και τρομερός ήταν ο γέρος που μου μίλησε κείνη τη νύχτα. Με δύο κόρακες να μας γυροφέρνουν από ψηλά και το σκοτάδι να υφαίνει φαντασμαγορία πάνω απ' το χιόνι, ο γέρος μίλησε... και ήταν λες και μιλούσε ο ουρανός ο ίδιος....

Εκείνοι που δεν έχουν τιμή, ας βάλλουν τον πρώτο λίθο

Γεννημένοι εκ του ερπετού

Η μπάσταρδή τους δυναστεία τρέμει με φόβο πίσω από θώρακες καταφρόνιας

Χλευάζοντας την ανδρεία εκείνων των περήφανων αρκετά,

για νά ’ναι ρωμαλέοι, για να ‘ναι αληθινοί

Όχι όμως πια!

Τους αποβάλλω απ’ τη δόξα του σκοτεινού δάσους

Σύνθλιψέ τους!

Μπας και δεχτούν τις ακτίνες του φεγγαριού του Χειμώνα

Ξερίζωσε τις αδύναμες κα ανάξιες καρδιές τους

Ώστε να μην βεβηλώνουν πια, τούτο το ευλογημένο βασίλειο

Αίσθημα περιδίνησης και πτώσης και.... βροντερός κρότος! Τα μάτια μου άνοιξαν διάπλατα ξαφνικά. Ο άνεμος είχε γίνει ψίθυρος. Γυρνώντας στην Ανατολή, είδα τον ουρανό να ανοίγει και βελούδινο φως να γεννιέται. Με τη φλόγα να καίει ακόμα, βάστηξα και πάλι το κερί και πήρα το δρόμο... όχι προς τα πίσω.... αλλά εμπρός!

Λάβρυς, το σκήπτρο του βαρβάρου βασιλιά της Βαλουσίας, Καλλ. Ο Καλλ περιφρονεί το σπαθί, δεν ασπάζεται τον λόγο, δεν συμβιβάζεται στα όρια του πολιτισμού. Αντ' αυτού, κραδαίνει πολεμικό πέλεκυ, όπλο και έμβλημα της κυριαρχίας του επί του πολιτισμένου χώρου.

"What do these Christians?" asked Wulfhere curiously.

"They eat babies during their ceremonies, it is said."

"But 'tis also said the Druids burn men in cages of green wood."

"A lie spread by Caesar and believed by fools!" rasped Cormac impatiently. "I laud not the Druids especially, but wisdom of the elements and ages is not denied to them. These Christians teach meekness and the bowing of the neck to the blow."

"What say you?" The great Viking was sincerely amazed. "Is it truly their creed to take blows like slaves?"

"Aye to return good for evil and to forgive their opressors."

The giant meditated on this statement for a moment. "That is not a creed, but cowardice," he decided finally. "These Christians be all madmen. Cormac, if you recognize one of that breed, point him out and I will try his faith." He lifted his axe meaningfully. "For look you," he said, "that is an insidious and dangerous teaching which may spread like rust on the wheat and undermine the manhood of men if it be not stamped out like a young serpent under heel."

"Let me but see one of these madmen" said Cormac grimly, "and I will begin the stamping."

We storm ahead with swords’n shields
